While most free stuff junkies only like totally free offers, e.g., absolutely free with no shipping, handling or other catches, we would be remiss if we didn’t at least address the fact that there are other quality offers out there that are worth a small sacrifice to get. These offers are almost always called “Almost Freebies”, or “Freebies with a Catch”. Sometimes a really quality free offer seems to come with a small catch. These include
shipping and/or handling charges, postage, giving up some additional information etc… If you’re a freebies hardliner, you’re probably not going to be interested in this article, or in any of the offers listed here. However, if you’re one of those people who can smell a really good deal a mile away, even if it comes with a stipulation, then by all means read on, as this could open your eyes to a whole new world of free stuff offer possibilities.
By the way, here’s an explanation on why companies sometimes attach a shipping, handling and/or postage charge to an item they’re giving away. The very, very short version answer to this, is that offering anything for free, is a very expensive enterprise for any company, whether they’re a multi-billion dollar corporation or a small family owned business. If you just sit and think for a moment about what it does cost, you’ll immediately
understand, and really appreciate the “totally free” offers even more. To give you a quick minds eye view, just think on this for a moment. Here’s all, or most of the costs associated with a free giveaway campaign:
- Manufacturing
- Labor for manufacturing
- Packaging
- Labor for packaging
- Shipping
- Labor for shipping
- *Gathering feedback
- Labor for gathering feedback
Not to mention, mortgage or rent, supplies, insurance etc…etc… *incidentally, feedback is included because in 99.9% of cases, it’s the only reason a company gives anything away free to begin with.
If you’re a seasoned free stuff hunter, you already know and love the main stream totally free offers you’ve seen, applied for, and received. The small free sample packs of everything from food products to household goods, car care, beauty, health, personal care and so on. Not to mention the gift certificates good for a free ice cream cone, burger, flashlight or whatever.
However, many times we overlook an offer of great quality and value because it has a stipulation attached to it. Well…we’re here to tell you that there are many of these offers available, and that they are worth your time and extra effort as long as you use common sense when considering them. We’ve put together a short list of recommended tips and tricks that we think will help you in deciding if an offer of this type is worth the additional
requirements to get.
- Always try to know who you’re dealing with when it comes to Almost Freebies, or any other kind of free offer. Obviously, well known brand name items are less of a risk, because no good company would ever intentionally want to lose your business over a $2 or $3 shipping charge.
- Use this formula when calculating if an item being offered is worth a shipping/handling or postage charge. The S&H should always be no more than 15% of the items total suggested retail worth. Here’s an example: say a widget you want is worth $15.00 retail. 15% of $15.00 is $2.25. Paying any more in shipping for this item would make it an undesirable offer and not worth your time or money. However, to get a really quality widget worth $15.00,
that you really want for only $2.25, is a very good deal indeed.
- Stay away from offers with attachments that ask for hefty S&H, loose stamps, credit card info, extremely intrusive personal info, mandatory additional offer selections and in short, what feels like your right or left arm.
- Always, and we do mean Always, give out the correct shipping and email info when applying for an offer of this sort. Look, you’re paying and/or giving something to get the item. It makes no sense at all to give out false info so they can’t complete the request and send it to you. You can still use a throw away email account to apply. Just make sure it’s an account you check on a regular basis, in case they, or you, need to communicate.
- Never, ever sign up for any offer with a reoccurring billing cycle. That is unless you’re totally comfortable with the company you’re dealing with, and ONLY if they have a clear cancelation policy.
That’s it. Like we said, there are loads of almost free offers out there. Now you have all the skinny on them. It’s up to you to decide if they’re worth your time or not.
