Blogger has become one of the premier free blog services online. Owned and operated by Goggle, the service offers a bevy of rich features including quick online setup, custom templates, support for image uploading, generous storage and bandwidth limits and much more. One of Blogger's coolest features though is that it is indexed both by Google blog bot and by the Google search bot. Additionally, blogs with solid content show up on a rotating URL marquee at the top of their main page. Can you say - instant free traffic?! As for income opportunities with a Blogger blog, naturally, Google has made it easy to incorporate AdSense into your blog with a special tool.

Here's an easy-to-use free blog and photo album service that offers many handy features, including a WYSIWYG entry editor, spell checker, multiple photo albums, blog search, stats, customized colors, personal profile, comment notify, RSS/XML feeds, and more.

WordPress
The granddaddy of all free blog creation and hosting services, WordPress offers an impressive, easy to set-up and use platform. The service is an all–inclusive free blog package that offers intuitive creation tools, hosting services, automatic Goggle blog directory submission and stat monitoring. WordPress is owned and operated by the same company that developed the software engine that runs more than 75% of all online blogs. The best part about WordPress is that it is 100% ad free. There are no obtrusive ads clogging your blog entries and and slowing the service down. The services feature set is robust and includes all the tools to build and promote your free blog. In fact, the features are so complete, we would be hard pressed (pardon the lousy pun) to list them here. The only drawback to WordPress is the inability to place any type of ad service (including AdSense) on your blog. So if you're looking to make some scratch from it, you need to look elsewhere. Please note that as of this review, WordPress states, and we quote "Please send us feedback if you’d like to put ads on your blog - we are considering such a feature for a future upgrade."

LiveJournal
LiveJournal epitomizes the term digital diary. It offers an extremely simple set of tools for the easy creation and sharing of user thoughts and expression. LiveJournal is made up of millions of loyal users and active community volunteers. The service is more multinational than any other in this group with active blogs from every part of the world. The service is easy to setup and offers a substantial tool set. Unfortunately, after setup you're more or less on your own as help is only offered in the form of online tutorials and FAQ's. LiveJournal also does not offer any additional stats tracking so if that's important to you we suggest looking elsewhere for a blog service. If, however you're in the market for a simple and quick online journal without loads of bells and whistles, LiveJournal just may be your cup of tea.

Xanga
Xanga's classic free blog service is a little harder to set up and use than some of the other services we're reviewed here. However, it is very powerful and does offer a fairly complete feature set for both newbies and pros. Features include a set up wizard, support for audio, video and images, loads of custom post settings and more. The service allows you have a public or private account and also allows you to ban users. Xanga supports it's free service with ads which will be placed on your blog.

You simply set Blog up with the necessary information for logging into your site via FTP, define a template to specify the look for your page and then type in your entries in the main Blog window and click Publish and Blog does the rest! Blog also handles the task of generating archival entries for older posts. It is a really convenient way to keep a site (or multiple sites) updated without going through several programs to do the job.
