Free Web Based email Services
E2Umail
E2Umail is a free web based email service that offers loads of cool user friendly features. Some of these are
unique to the service. E2Umail serves up a generous 350 megs of storage. It's web mail interface is slick
looking, easy to use and is ad free. The service is POP3, IMAP and WAP compatible. There are loads of extras
for power users here like Spam & Virus Protection, email Forwarding, Contacts & Calendar, Short
Message Service, Mail Monitor Utility and much more.
Inbox.com
Inbox free web based email accounts come with a hefty 2 Gigabytes of storage space and that's just for starters.
This free service is long on great features and short on drawbacks (although unfortunately, there are a few).
Inbox's interface is a pleasure to view and use. It is super fast and not cluttered with loads of banner and
popup ads. Useful features here include an excellent email compose editor that supports both plain text and
rich HTML, integrated search function, folder filters, near flawless spam filtering, flat based address book,
thread view massage option and much more. As we mentioned there are a few drawbacks with Inbox.com. These
include the inability to use non inbox addresses in outgoing messages, a short 45 day inactive period and lack
of support for encrypted mail and digital signatures. However, even with those, Inbox is pure free email
account pleasure and should be on your short list when deciding on a service to use.
FastMail
Here's a great free web based email service for power users. A FastMail free email account comes with a 10 MB
storage limit and many features only found in a locally installed pop3 email program. The service supports full
IMAP access and although it's ad supported it's interface is super fast. FastMail's ads are not intrusive on
your workspace and compared to other free services are minimal. The service offers a feature rich message
editor that makes it easy to compose email in both rich HTML and plain-text formats. Other features include
custom filters, vacation auto-replies, junk mail and virus filtering, anti phishing filters that disable
misleading links to help protect your privacy, import wizards for collecting your mail from pop3 and other web
based clients and a easy to use and configure address book. The only drawback here is FastMail's short 45 day
inactive period, (e.g., your account goes inactive if you do not log-in for 45 days.).
Gmail
Gmail is Google's answer to free web based email and chat rolled into one very well put
together package. The service offers a whopping 2.7 (and counting) gigabytes of storage. Like the Google
search engine, their free email service layout is clean and fast. Although it is ad supported, all ads are in
text format so you don't loose a lot of work space fighting bloated banner and/or popup ads. Gmail offers an
impressive list of features including an unheard of 9 month inactive period, full folder support, an archive
feature where you can store an almost unlimited amount of received mail, intuitive filters for your friends
list and to deter spam, easy to use compose and send, a message search tool, keyboard shortcuts and much more.
The only drawbacks here are having to be invited to open an account and Gmail's lack of support for IMAP
access and inline images. Past experience has shown Google's willingness to address user concerns and requests
for additional options, so we anticipate the above drawbacks to be resolved with-in time. Bottom line - If you
can get an invitation to open a free Gmail account, snap it up fast! Gmail is so cool and loaded with exclusive
features, it may be the only email system you'll ever need. Editors note:
You must be invited by a current Gmail account holder to open a new account yourself.
Yahoo! Mail
Yahoo! Mail started out to compete with it's main rival "Hotmail" and wound up morphing into a
monster that has since blown HM's doors off. This free web based email service from the directory king has
grown to offer a generous 1 gigabyte of storage and loads of other useful free extras. These include excellent
spam filtering, automatic virus protection and additional security protection, custom stationary, folder
filters, a simple yet effective mail compose editor, support for rich HTML, mail photo service and much more.
Of course you also get access to many other Yahoo! favorites like search, games, chat and more all from the
same log-in. Unfortunately, Yahoo! Mail also has some drawbacks like lack of support for message threads,
plain text composing, digital signatures and message encryption. On top of that, the services mail folder
search function is clumsy and not intuitive which really boggles the mind being that it's well...Yahoo! for
goodness sake! Even with it's drawbacks, Yahoo! Mail is a powerful free web based email service and definitely
worth your time to check out.
goowy mail
If your tired of static text based web mail and looking to jazz things up a little, then goowy mail might just
be your ticket. This free flash based webtop (like desktop) email service is anything but boring and offers a
giant sized 2 gigabytes of storage. Goowy mail jumps off the screen as soon as you enter the site. The service
is loaded with cool flash effects that up it's WOW factor, if not it's functionality. The service is not all
glitz and glamour though. Goowy delivers an integrated webtop experience for managing your personal
communications (integrated instant messaging, email, contacts, and calendar). It also has other very useful
features like pop3 support, mail, address book and option import, message search, a decent message composer,
spam filters, a fair address book, integrated components called "goowy minis" that are actually mini
applications with-in the main program shell to display weather, stock and other information, an option to link
up with any RSS feed and more. It is also relatively fast, being it's flash based. the goowy mail inactive
period is a generous 120 days, after which an account is disabled. If you're looking for something completely
unique in a free web based email service, goowy mail is definitely worth adding to your short list.
Editors note: Look for the "Goowy Webtop"
link on the site.
MSN Hotmail
Hotmail from Microsoft started the free web based email revolution on the Internet. Hotmail has made many
changes to the service since our last review however, the truth is that Hotmail has still not grown or changed
with the times compared to other free services and is still an after thought when deciding to pick one. The
free service does offer a generous 2 gigabytes of storage, but lacks both pop and IMAP access (both available
with their paid premium service). Hotmail also now offers a message search feature, secure messaging, email
management tools and spam filters. However, all of these are typically MS cryptic, making them almost useless
for the average user. In addition to it's non user friendly interface, Hotmail is still loaded with obtrusive
graphic advertising making the simplest chore on the service agonizing. We recommend you look elsewhere for
your free web based email service.
Free Pop3 email Services
Lavabit
Developed by independent programmers concerned about peoples privacy rights on the Internet, this site offers
free anonymous POP3 e-mail accounts with 1024 MB's of storage. Lavabit includes an impressive list of features
with their free service, a few of which include virus checking, and powerful interface, sorting and mail
management tools. The service does not offer a web based client at this time so you will have to configure
your local email program (e.g., outlook, thunderbird etc.) for this account. The Lavabit free service also
does not offer any spam filters so you will have to find an add-on utility to accomplish this task.
Editors note: This service was formally called
"Nerdshack".
LPEmail
LPEmail offers a free POP3 and web-based email service with 10 MB of storage and sophisticated anti-spam
