Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall
If you are like most personal users you've read about and agonized over whether or not to install a firewall on your system. Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall is a safe bet for those who are uneasy about the decision. The program is super easy to set up and use and unlike other firewall programs it's learning curve can be mastered by even the most computer challenged. Kerio PF can be set to run automatically at Windows startup, or activated manually. There are three security levels offered which can be manually selected and changed at any time. The program offers other protection tools against malicious dialers, pop-ups and tracking cookies. It also offers a password protection feature for extra security. Sunbelt has recently changed Kerio PF's status from freeware to trialware and there are a few features that are disabled after 30 days (see editors note below). However, all in all, Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall is a good choice for anyone wanting an easy to setup and use secure firewall program.

ZipCentral

Are you concerned about leaving tracks to the sites you visit on the Internet? JAP makes it possible to surf the internet anonymously. Every computer in the internet communicates using a traceable address and can determine which websites the user of a specific computer visits. JAP solves this problem by using a single static address which is shared by many JAP users. That way neither the visited website, nor an eavesdropper can determine which user visited which website. While JAP is not 100% effective, it is pretty close and offers enough protection for the average web surfer concerned about leaving tracks.

K9 - Add-on Spam Filter
K9 is an email filtering application that works in conjunction with your regular POP3 email program and automatically classifies incoming emails as spam (junk email) or non-spam without the need for maintaining dozens of rules or constant updates to be downloaded. The program is based on Bayesian filters and uses intelligent statistical analysis that can result in extremely high accuracy over time. K9 learns from its mistakes and becomes better and better at being able to identify spam. More importantly it learns to recognize what you consider to be spam.

Editors note: The only drawback to this program is that it can be a resource hog unless you use it regularly. Do not let your file list get too large and you will not encounter this problem.

The Proxomitron
Pop-up blockers have lost their wide appeal due to many good web browser apps and add-on toolbars (Firefox and Google are two good examples) integrating the feature. However, as free pop-up blockers go, The Proxomitron is absolutely the most powerful we have ever come across. The program not only stops pop-up windows in their tracks but also goes the extra mile by killing pop-under ads, flash animations, status bar scrolling scripts and just about anything else you care to set up in it's options menu...and...it does all this on the fly! Now that's a useful utility. If your current pop-up tool is not powerful enough for you, we highly recommend you check out The Proxomitron.
