Search Tips and Tricks:

The following tips and tricks will help refine your searches and will bring you many more relevant results saving you time and aggravation.

  1. Use keyword phrases in lieu of single keywords. e.g., ( beauty freebies ) in lieu of just ( freebies )

  2. When entering your keyword phrase, try and be as specific as possible, e.g., use ( free cosmetic samples ) or ( free samples of cosmetics for teens ) in lieu of just ( free samples ).

  3. Don't be afraid to tell the search engine exactly what you want! If you want a ( free maintenance manual for a 1968 ford mustang ) then by all means - type it in! Don't expect relevant results if you don't tell the engine what you are looking for in detail.

Additionally, you can add exceptions to your search to further refine it, e.g., try using something like ( free makeup samples without shipping and handling ) or even better use a little search engine math to refine your search like ( free cosmetic samples +Maybelline +Covergirl -shipping -handling ). More on SE math below.

  4. Avoid using common words like "and", "from", "to", "for" etc... All the big search engines strip these words out of queries now so using them is meaningless not to mention time consuming. In fact, some SE's even get a little snotty when you use the words by placing a highlighted, bold notice informing visitors they are not needed. Don't worry, the engines will know what you mean even with out these words.

  5. If you are searching for an exact item or phrase, try placing your search phrase in quotes, e.g., ( "free cosmetic samples Maybelline" ) This will tell the search engine to only search that exact phrase.

Without the quotes, your search will look like this to the search engine ( free "plus" cosmetic "plus" samples "plus" Maybelline ). The engine will search on each word in your query individually and combined. It will then give you a compilation result with pages containing one or all of the search terms in (and this is important) any part of the page. So you may wind up with a result page with the word "Maybelline" at the top of the page, the word "cosmetic" in the middle and the word "free" in a link at the bottom. While all your keywords are on the page, the result will most likely be for a cosmetics dealer and will not have any free sample offers on it...which will not be what you want.

By simply using "" quotes you can greatly refine your search to the exact thing you are looking for.

  6. More about search engine math. Ok, we've discussed using keyword phrases, quotation marks and being as specific as possible when you search. Now we're going to teach you a little about SE math. Oh Stop Whining! We're not going back to school and this is super simple to understand - we promise.

Remember those + and - signs we used above to help refine a search? Well those signs are actually SE math. They are used as operators when searching and they work exactly the way they look. The + sign means add (or plus) and the - means subtract (or minus). Pretty simple so far right? Using these math operators in a search will allow you to tell a search engine exactly what you are looking for.

Lets look at an example. Say you are looking for free cosmetic samples that are for someone with fair skin, are totally free (without shipping costs) and available in Canada. You could type in: free makeup samples for people with fair skin that are available in Canada and I do not want to pay for shipping and handling. That would be specific, but it sure is long, not to mention UGLY! It also is likely to get you either no results or thousands of non relevant ones. Even if you put the above search in quotations it wouldn't do you much good. This is where SE math really shines! Lets take a look.

Here is how to search for exactly what you want using SE math: ( free cosmetic samples +fair skin +Canada -shipping -handling )  Notice what we are telling the search engine to look for in a Webpage? Here is a breakdown: 1. Free cosmetic samples. 2. Plus fair skin. 3. Plus offer good in Canada. 4. Minus shipping costs. 5. Minus handling costs.

One special note. Make sure you add a space before a + or - sign in your search query, e.g., free cosmetic samples (space here) + fair skin

Incidentally, you may be asking "I see plus and minus, isn't there multiplication in SE math too?" Well, what a bright little nipper you are! Just kidding. Actually, there is multiplication in SE math and it's the quotations (") we spoke of earlier. Basically, the quotes tell a search engine to multiply all the words with-in the quotes when looking up your search query.

  7. Even more options for the advanced user.

After they get their results from a search engine, many people think they are final. If they are not satisfied, they try searching all over again using different search terms. This can turn out to be a laborious and unproductive process. Not to mention extremely frustrating as well.

If you search for something and are not satisfied with the results, try clicking on the engines "Advanced Search" link. Here you will be given loads of additional options to refine your search. Don't worry about not knowing what you are doing, all the well known engines list free help sections that will walk you through the process in terms most advanced users can understand. It may take a few more minutes than a standard search, but isn't that a lot better than pulling your hair out by it's roots while trying to find what you want on your own!

Well that's it. Wasn't too hard was it? Now you can be a SE expert, search to your hearts content and most importantly, impress the heck out of all your friends! Happy searching from Cool Freebie Links!
